Where AI Labs’ Coding Agents Run

Claude Code and Codex reach local, remote and cloud machines from a phone. Google's Antigravity reaches your own machines, and its cloud agent Jules is closing.

Four bands, one per lab, each linking where you start its coding agent (terminal, desktop app, web, phone, Slack) to where it works (local machine, remote machine, the lab's cloud). Anthropic's Claude Code links every surface to the cloud and to remote machines, and most to the local machine. OpenAI's Codex links every surface to its cloud, the terminal to the local machine, and the phone and desktop app to local and remote machines. Google's Antigravity links the desktop app, web and phone to local and remote machines and the terminal to the local machine, and Jules, dashed as winding down, links terminal and web to Google's cloud, with Slack greyed. xAI's Grok Build links only the terminal to the local machine.
Each line links where you start a lab's coding agent to the machine it works on, as the lab's own pages state it on Nov 3, 2026. Greyed items have no such statement. Jules is dashed: Google said it winds down on Dec 31, 2026. Download

Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex can each be started from a terminal, a desktop app, the web or a phone, and can work on your own computer, a remote machine or the lab's cloud. Google's Antigravity works on your own machines, local or remote, and since August 2026 can be driven from a browser or a phone. Jules, Google's coding agent that runs in Google's cloud, winds down on Dec 31, 2026. xAI's Grok Build runs from a terminal on your computer.

Claude Code reaches every machine from a phone

Anthropic launched Claude Code as a terminal tool on Feb 24, 2025. On Oct 20, 2025 it added Claude Code on the web and in the Claude iOS app, with tasks that "run on Anthropic-managed cloud infrastructure". The redesigned desktop app runs sessions "locally or in the cloud" and points them at remote machines over SSH. Remote Control lets you continue a session running on your own machine from a phone or a browser. Self-hosted environments, in public beta since Aug 6, 2026, run sessions started from the web, mobile or desktop on a company's own infrastructure, and Anthropic's guide to cloud sessions adds the terminal and Slack.

Tagging Claude in Slack has started a cloud session since Dec 8, 2025. Anthropic's documentation says that earlier version now answers only Pro, Max and Ultra accounts, in workspaces not connected to Claude Tag. Dispatch, which hands a task from your phone to Claude on your computer, is in limited beta and closed to new users.

Codex runs from a phone on a Mac mini

OpenAI released Codex CLI on Apr 16, 2025, and a cloud agent a month later, in which "each task runs in its own cloud sandbox environment". By September 2025 Codex also worked in the ChatGPT iOS app, and it came to Slack in October. The Codex app for macOS followed on Feb 2, 2026, and added SSH to remote devboxes, in alpha, in April. Since May 14, 2026, the ChatGPT mobile app connects to Codex running on "your laptop, a dedicated Mac mini, or a managed remote environment". The CLI's codex cloud command and the desktop app also start work in Codex cloud.

Google's Antigravity runs on your machines

Google's Jules launched on May 19, 2025, spinning up "a fresh dev environment in a VM" for each task from jules.google.com, and added a command line in October 2025. Antigravity, a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, launched on Nov 18, 2025. At I/O on May 19, 2026 Google released Antigravity 2.0 and the Antigravity CLI, and asked Gemini CLI users to move to it. Antigravity's Remote Control, announced on Aug 21, 2026, drives sessions "running across your different machines (laptops, servers, desktops)" from a web browser, and its documentation names phones among the devices. On Oct 29, 2026, Google said that "as part of our work to unify our agentic coding efforts, Jules will wind down on December 31, 2026", read-only after Nov 11. No Google page states a Slack surface for the Antigravity app or CLI, or a Google cloud for them to run in.

Grok Build runs in a terminal

xAI introduced Grok Build on May 25, 2026 as "a new coding agent that runs right from your terminal". xAI's posts state no desktop app, web, phone, cloud or remote machine for it.

How the map was drawn

Each line is a link that a lab's own post, documentation or help page states, as of Nov 3, 2026, for a product the lab provides. Running a terminal agent on a server over SSH, and integrations a customer builds through an API, such as the Jules API from Slack, are not drawn. The table gives the date of the page cited, which can be later than the feature. Chat app builders such as Grok Build Mode and Google AI Studio's Build mode, and general agents such as Claude Cowork, OpenAI's Dots and Grok Bot, are left out.
